Warhammer Quest

The Teeth of Gwahia

by William Hughes

Background

Deep in the jungles of Lustria lies a mysterious ruined city, high atop an isolated plateau. Local legend refers to a pair of massive emeralds, known as the teeth of Gwahiar, that lie within that would be worth a fortune in the Empire, or Tilea, or Ulthuan. The warrior that steals these gems will be set for life! Sadly, the entrance to the city is unknown and the entire area is taboo.

The warriors convince the local King of the Pygmies that they would make excellent mercenaries, and train his armies in modern warfare so as to defeat his twin brother. After months showing the diminutive army how to use a spear, the warriors have learned that the local high shaman knows the location of the teeth of Gwahiar and the entrance to the ancient city.

The shaman is suspicious of the warriors. He decides to be rid of them forever, and declares that a royal procession to the ruined city to consult the oracle there must be made. He intends to fake a pronouncement by oracle by dressing up a slave girl, declaring that the warriors are evil, and to be destroyed! But the warriors have seen it coming, and quickly switch the slave girl for another, who declares that the warriors should be entrusted with the care of the gems!

Just as the spluttering shaman is about to hand the teeth of Gwahiar over, the cities ancient protectors attack! Grey skinned ghouls leap out from every nook and cranny, slaughter the royal procession, including the shaman, steal the teeth, and vanish into the gloom. The warriors light their trusty lantern and, taking the slave girl with them, follow them into the dark.

Set-up

Prepare the dungeon deck as normal. Use the fire chasm as the objective room.

Whenever an event card is drawn, roll a dice. On a 1-3 use the card as printed. On a 4+ roll on the following table. Each of the events below can only occur once, strike it off the list and re-roll if it is generated again.

1: D6 ghouls
2: 2d6 skinks
3: 1d6 saurus
4: A stone block plummets from the ceiling. A randomly determined warrior must roll a dice and add his initiative, getting a score of 7 or more, or take 2d6 wounds from the stone block, with no deductions for armour. 4 Ghouls immediately attack after this event. Place a counter on the warrior's square, to indicate it is blocked, and move the warrior to one side.

5: A lone ghoul hurries onto the board section, clutching something. Place the ghoul as far as possible away from the warriors, on the same board section. If the warriors manage to wound or kill the ghoul, it will drop the small box. The ghoul disappears into the gloom when it is next allowed to move, whether it is pinned or not. If the ghoul drops the box, it contains one of the teeth!

6: 2D6 ghouls attempt to destroy the warriors!

When the warriors reach the objective room, place it backwards. The entrance to the objective room is directly beside the altar. Place 2D6 ghouls in the room, on the OTHER side of the fire chasm.

Once all the warriors are in the objective room, the entrance collapses. There is only one way out now! The remaining tooth, or both teeth, are displayed on the alter. Any warrior may snatch the teeth by taking one turn next to the alter. Once the warriors have the teeth, they immediately give them to the slave girl, to keep their hands free for fighting.

Once all the warriors have crossed the bridge, they hear a scream behind them. The slave girl has slipped on the bridge, dropped the box with the teeth, and both are sliding into the fire. The warriors must choose: save the girl, or save the teeth.

If they save the teeth, they may roll any number of dice and multiply by 500. This is the amount of gold they gain. If two or more of the dice turn up a one, then they gain a total of 500 gold. However, all warriors except the pit fighter and chaos warrior are at -3 for all fear tests in the next 1d6 adventures due to a guilty conscience. And yer all cads, too.

If they save the girl, the teeth are lost, and no further treasure is gained, except that which you can visualize. Don't make a mess, clean up after yourself.
