Chracian White Lion Hunter

By Phoenix King

The White Lion Hunters are among the strongest Elves. They are great woodsmen and hunters as well. They originally come from the Outer Kingdom of Chrace in Ulthuan. This land is constantly ravaged by Dark Elf hordes trying to break through and reach the Inner Kingdoms. Each time, great Elven armies clash and repel the invaders. The White Lions are among the Elves who try to stand against these threats. They gain their title by killing one of the ferocious Chracian White Lions, one of the most dangerous creatures in this wild land, and then wear the skin of the dead animal as a cloak which also gives protection. Because of this they are often simply referred to as White Lions. They tend to be fierce warriors, not very different from the lions which they hunt. They wield huge woodsmen’s axes. They are all expert woodsmen. For a Chracian to become a White Lion is a great honor and they will continue to wear their lion’s pelt for the rest of their lives as a mark of courage.

The Hunters that leave for the Old World to become adventurers are generally the most bitter, hardened Elves who have already seen many battles and much slaughter from  the attacks of the Dark Elves and other enemies of the Elves. Unlike other Elves they are not quite so good with ranged weapons such as bows as they spend much time using their axes but this does not mean they are not good with bows and the like. They are, however, some of the best adventuring companions one could hope for. They are strong, resolute, ferocious, fast and intelligent. While they have an axe in their hand and monsters to fight, they will never stop till they have proved themselves.

Lion’s Pelt

These thick furs act as armour and give +1T. If combined with any other armour, except helms or shields, then the White Lion suffers a -1 Movement penalty.

Great Axe

This massive axe gives +2S and counts as a double-handed weapon. The White Lion Hunter may not use a shield or ranged weapon in the same turn he uses his axe.

-Skills-

Woodsmen

All Chracians are expert woodsmen; their skills are equaled only by their arboreal kin the Wood Elves of Loren in the Old World. To represent this they never suffer any movement penalties for moving through woods.

Woodsman’s Axe

The White Lions are greatly skilled using the native Chracian design of the woodsman’s axe. They are extremely skilled in the handling of these weapons, using them to fight bears, lions and worse. In combat they can use this in three special techniques:

Lion Rampant
The axe is used to hold back the enemy and blunt the force of his attack.
The enemy suffers a -1 to hit penalty. This can be used only when an enemy has just moved towards you and  attacked you.

Lion Leaping
The warrior uses the weight of his weapon to drive straight into his opponent using his elven speed and agility to catch him off balance.
The White Lion gains an extra attack. This can only be used just after moving towards an enemy.

Lion Claw
The White Lions employ this method to cut thick logs and it is said that a well aimed blow using this method could cut a thick tree in two.
In combat it is used against large creatures with many wounds. It causes D2 x damage on the enemy. If a natural 1 is rolled to wound then the attack goes wild and the enemy takes no damage regardless of Strength and Toughness.

-Special Rules-

-White Lions will only use axes. These can be of any kind but he cannot employ the use of swords, spears or any other combat weapons. They may not use any magical weapons except for magical axes. They can only use the Woodsman’s Axe skill with their great axe, however.

-White Lions can wear magic armour without the -1 movement penalty.

-They can use any item magic items available to the Barbarian or Elf.

-If at any time the White Lion Hunter would normally lose his pelt he does not do so automatically. Roll 2D6 on a double 1 or 6 he loses it and immediately leaves his companions to return to Ulthuan. Here he will attempt to kill another of the ferocious beasts to gain his title of White Lion. Hunter.

-Settlements-

-White Lions may visit the Alehouse with a -1 modifier, they are attuned to these types of places than most Elves.

-They may also visit the Alchemists Laboratory, Temple, the Weaponsmith, the Armourer, the Fletcher, the Animal trader, the general store and the Elf Quarter.

-The White Lion Hunter can buy anything available to the Barbarian or Elf. He may only buy axes from the Weaponsmith.

-He may not buy the Elf Cloak, Elf Helm, Elf Armour or Elf Shield from the Elf Quarter.

*Once he has found the Elven Quarter he may roll a D6. On a 3+ there is also a Charoi there.

Charoi is the Elven Rune of Strength and Ferocity. The White Lions who exist in the Old World have formed small communities called ‘Charoi’s and in these they can meet with others and buy specially made equipment.

In a Charoi the following equipment can be bought:

*Note that axes bought from the Charoi traders will count as Great Axes for the purposes of special rules (i.e. Woodsman’s axe) and skills. This is because they are cut to the special Chracian Woodman’s axe shape.

The Axes also have a lower stock level than the Weaponsmith as the Charoi traders specialize in Axes and so will almost always have them in stock unless there is a shortage (they are imported from Chrace).

BATTLE LEVEL TABLE

Skillls

PERFECT AIM

This skill allows your warrior to re-roll one missed roll to hit each turn.

BRAVERY

As the Bloodthirster lumbered towards him, he shut his eyes tight and remembered the days of his youth; the ferocious White Lion jusmping at his throat and slashing wildly and violently. He had killed it and he would kill this Bloodthirster. Opening his eyes he gripped his axe hard till his knuckles were pure white and prayed silently waiting for a chance.

With this skill your warrior gets +2 to all his fear and terror rolls

FURY

As he saw the Dark Elf he felt the memories flood back into him. Fighting alongside his father and best friend as they had held back the Dark Elves until reinforcements could come. Finally the easily outnumbering Dark Elves pushed forwards. The sound of a horn blowing sounded the arrival of the High Elf reinforcements’ arrival. As the reinforcements charged down the hill, he had watched as his father and best friend were both cut down. The Fury he felt now was too much. He charged forward in a Frenzy hacking wildly.

Roleplaying Tips

The White Lions are stern people through many battle and are hardened adventurers. Remember that they are stronger than most Elves and this should reflect in the way they act. They do share many other Elvish attributes such as agility and so they are, in a way, a cross between the Barbarian and the Elf. They are not quite so agile, however, which is reflected in their pinning roll no longer being automatic as Woodsmen rely more on their strength than their ability to escape. They are fighters as opposed to archers. Reading the High Elf section in the Bestiary should help. It is also important to remember that many White Lions make up the Phoenix King’s own special bodyguard. These are some of the most elite Elf Warriors and they don’t want to be killed in some fruitless dungeon battle. On the other hand they have witnessed death to a great degree and have learned to live with it. They also have a serious dislike of Dark Elves as they have fought so many battle with their dark brethren to hold off possible invasions.

Games Master’s Notes

How a White Lion should react is up to you but they should not be hanging back firing with a bow. They would only use such a weapon if they are trapped in a position where they can do nothing else. They should really be as agile as an Elf. Perhaps slightly less intellectual. They are, however quite strong like the Barbarian but not tough. There modifiers etc. will have to reflect this. It is really just getting a feel for this hard, unrelenting warrior. After that most of it is self explanitory.

Representing Your Warrior

Representing your warrior is quite easy. Use one of the many Citadel Miniatures that exist. The Champion is also a particularly good model who seems to be barking orders out. Korhil, the special character is also another possible option. As the White Lions are an existing troop type there is really no difficulty in representing them.
